He was one of Texas' most famous folk heroes in the days of the Republic and in the years after.  In the state cemetery in Austin, a pink-granite marker over his grave aptly states: "Big Foot Wallace. Here lies he who spent his manhood defending the homes of Texas. Brave, honest, and faithful."
