Sam
Houston didn't actually build the hills or plant the trees, but without
him, Texas might have become a state in Mexico. First he fought to
unify the fiercely independent people of Texas and release the territory
from the clutches of Mexico. Then he spent years trying to convince
Texans that they should become part of the United States. His boisterous,
stubborn, and dramatic personality earned him nicknames such as Old Dragon,
Tyrant, and even Old Humbug, but Texans liked him enough to elect him the
first president of the Texas Republic, one of their first U.S. senators,
and later, governor.
